3: Who Should Join?

The Participants

From Ae to Ze, all individuals typically experiencing the exclusion that gendered sports, change rooms, rest rooms and life instill are welcome to participate! Their closest of allies are welcome as well (partners, best friends, cuddle-buds, etc); I trust no one would intentionally bring any disrespectful trolls to what is supposed to be a safer space. That being said, please be sure you’re aware of your guest’s attitude towards proper pronoun usage and the diversity that exists in our communities.

As people who generally do not conform to society’s expectations of who we should be, we often face violence, harassment, perverse invasive questioning, and bullying – add on top of that anything else that further marginalizes or puts a target on us. This leads to an added burden of wearing the armour needed to survive as such, which can mean we are constantly fighting each day just for the right to exist. The exciting news is that means each of us are already fighters! Compared to all of that, this program could be considered the gentle fight.

Now, a great way to release the stress of life for a lot of people is to sweat it out through movement of the body (sometimes it’s to curl up at home and cuddle the pup instead). Moving with friends or soon-to-be friends though, is an excellent method of community-building and self-development. Learning the skills for boxing can help build confidence and it can be fun to learn something new! So, if you have the energy, time and desire, I would encourage anyone who’s curious to join Umbrella Boxing for the most inclusive boxing in Winnipeg 🙂 Umbrella Boxing is not perfect, but the intention and desire to constantly improve is put into action step by step every day!
